According to the BBC, the mayor of Como has banned riding bicycles in parts of the historic Italian city after he was hit by an electric bike. Alessandro Rapinese said the move is intended to improve public safety and will require cyclists to dismount in about 30 streets from September. The measure is part of a wider package of traffic rules that creates a Limited Traffic Zone to manage tourist growth and imposes tighter restrictions on cars and vans in the city centre. The rules apply to both electric and push bikes, because Italian highway code does not distinguish between them. Rapinese said in a video that he collided with an e-bike in July after his administration had discussed traffic restrictions, and added that he was not taken to hospital. The new traffic regulations will also require some vehicles to have an annual permit and a €3 daily entry fee, while deliveries to shops and restaurants will be allowed only between 06:00 and 23:00. Tourists staying in hotels will be able to drive into the centre only if their accommodation has parking. The ban has drawn criticism from locals, and an online petition and a protest bike ride planned for 12 September are aimed at blocking the resolution.
