I think one of the easiest things to overlook in smart contract infrastructure is the computation itself.
A contract can theoretically perform complex operations. But a blockchain can't simply allow computation to continue without a defined limit.
Something has to answer a basic question??
How much computation is this transaction allowed to consume? Dusk's Rusk VM approaches this through gas accounting. The whitepaper describes Rusk as a Web Assembly-based VM with cryptographic functions including zero-knowledge proof verification, while the execution environment tracks gas limits and gas used as part of the state transition.
I find this more interesting than just saying Dusk has its own VM. The real problem is resource control.
A blockchain needs to support powerful computation without allowing one execution to consume unlimited network resources.
So, gas isn't just a number attached to a transaction.
It becomes part of the mechanism that puts a practical boundary around computation.
And that's something every programmable blockchain eventually has to solve??
