President Donald Trump said on Friday that he will "soon" declare the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory.
"Once we finish defeating Iran, which is currently suffering a crushing defeat, I will immediately declare the Strait of Hormuz to be part of the United States," Trump said at a rally at a police academy in Garden City, New York. "That's right," he added.
It’s unclear whether his statement was serious or signals a new policy shift for Washington in its war against Tehran, which has been ongoing for more than five months.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, dismissed Trump’s remarks, saying that Iran "will not be intimidated" and that the strategic waterway will remain under Iran’s control and authority.
