Moonlight vs Phoenix, I’m still thinking about this one... The question that got me started was: why make every transaction public or every transaction private when finance genuinely needs both?
Moonlight uses an account model with public balances and nonces, basically shaped like Ethereum. It makes sense for things that need an audit trail by default.
Phoenix uses a UTXO-style model with notes instead of balances, and privacy is built into the design. It is made for transfers where revealing the amount or the other party can be the actual risk.
What really stuck with me is that the docs don’t try to blend these two models together. They are kept clearly separate: two different transaction types running on the same DuskDS layer, rather than one model with a privacy toggle added later.
Institutional settlement may lean more toward Moonlight because compliance often needs transactions to be visible and auditable. Peer-to-peer transfers and sensitive positions, on the other hand, seem better suited to Phoenix.
Calling Dusk just a privacy chain feels like it misses the bigger design choice. It seems Dusk is betting that neither transparency nor privacy is enough on its own.
Now I’m curious which model ends up handling more real transaction volume in the long run.
