AI LABS ARE STARTING TO WATERMARK TEXT, NOT ONLY PICTURES 🚨👀✍️
Anthropic: new Claude models add a machine-readable text mark for the EU AI Act (Europe’s AI rule book for clear AI-content marks). Other big makers signed the same Code. Mark is invisible, should not raise price, and cannot point to one person or chat. 📅
What is a text watermark? 🤖
Images often show a corner logo (like many Google Gemini pictures). Text cannot wear a logo on a paragraph. The model builds the mark into word choice: “happy” vs “glad” when scores are almost equal. A secret rule gently pushes one option again and again. One line looks normal. A long page leaves a pattern only software can score. Not a weak “style guess” tool.
Limits ⚠️
Short text is hard to mark. Full rewrite can wipe the first model’s mark.
AI 1 → AI 2 rewrite in new words can remove AI 1’s mark. If AI 2 also watermarks, the new draft may carry AI 2’s mark. “Do not change any word” keeps the old mark. Light polish can leave a mark even when ideas started human.
Some said the lab owns that text. Under Anthropic terms, you keep input rights; it assigns you output rights. Process signal, not a property deed. 🧾
Who supports ✅
🔶 Harder to sell deepfakes, scams, and fake news as pure human speech
🔷 Schools and platforms get a tool against full AI essays sold as original work
Problems ⚠️
🟥 Light polish can still get flagged
🟧 Clients, schools, or bosses may punish a partial hit
🟨 Some fear quality loss (company says no practical hit)
🟪 EU-driven mark applied worldwide
⬛ Full rewrite on another AI can strip the first mark while careful light editors get hit
Should AI text carry a secret mark inside the words, or only a clear public label people can see without a detector? 👇
