Position Sizing Is the Strategy Most Traders Skip

Everyone obsesses over entries. Finding the perfect candle, the right RSI divergence, the exact support zone. But position sizing — how much of your portfolio you actually risk per trade — has more impact on long-term survival than any entry signal ever will.

Here is the core principle: in high-volatility environments, your position size must shrink. Not because you have less conviction, but because the range of outcomes widens dramatically. A 3% daily volatility asset can swing 10-15% in a week. If you are sizing for calm markets while volatility is elevated, you are taking on multiples of your intended risk.

A simple framework:
— Define your maximum loss tolerance per trade (e.g., 1-2% of portfolio)
— Measure the asset's recent volatility (ATR or standard deviation)
— Set your stop-loss distance based on volatility, not preference
— Derive position size as: (Portfolio × Risk%) ÷ Stop Distance

This keeps risk constant regardless of whether you are trading $BTC, $ETH, or $SOL. The math forces discipline when emotions push you toward oversizing.

The traders who compound over cycles are not the ones with the best calls — they are the ones who never blew up when they were wrong. Sizing is survival. Survival is compounding.

Protect the downside. The upside takes care of itself.
