Before looking into it carefully, I always thought that “privacy-first” blockchains for traditional finance only needed to solve privacy well enough.

At that time, I had never really verified how far privacy and compliance could coexist, mostly relying on common narratives around zero-knowledge, RWA and privacy blockchains.

So, I decided to research the conflict between privacy, compliance and decentralization more carefully.

The result was more nuanced than I expected.

There was one point that aligned with what I had thought: cryptography can indeed open up a new approach to privacy.

But what surprised me was: who has the right to see the data, is the validator set diverse enough and is privacy truly decentralized or just conditional privacy?

Instead of asking “does this chain have privacy?”, I started asking: who controls the privacy and how is compliance carried out?

The real issue is not about creating a private transaction.

It is about proving that the system both protects institutional information and allows regulators to access the right data when needed.

From a technical perspective, viewing keys, validator sets and zero-knowledge proofs all directly affect the actual level of privacy and decentralization.

If data access is still concentrated in a small group, then privacy becomes conditional privacy.

But if cryptography and selective disclosure mechanisms are designed correctly, privacy can become part of the infrastructure rather than just marketing.

Looking back, I realized that I approached the issue from common narratives, rather than verifying how the system actually works.

The research did not make me think everything was right or wrong, but simply showed me that the issue is more nuanced.

Therefore, my perspective on privacy blockchains has also changed.

I still want to see actual settlement, real custody and institutional capital flows - because that is what truly distinguishes real infrastructure from a beautiful narrative.
