There was a moment while researching DUSK when I closed the documents and just sat there for a while.

Not because I understood everything.

Actually, it was the opposite.

I had started with a simple question:

“Why would a financial institution even need a blockchain with privacy?”

If everything is supposed to be transparent on-chain, wouldn’t privacy make things more complicated?

The more I looked into Dusk, the more I realized I had been asking the wrong question.

Financial markets absolutely need transparency.

But transparency doesn’t mean every piece of information should be visible to everyone.

Think about a normal financial market.

A company knows who its investors are. Regulators can request information. Exchanges keep records.

But you don’t walk into a stock exchange and see the complete financial history of every investor displayed on a giant screen.

Yet when we talk about putting financial assets on public blockchains, we sometimes forget how strange that would actually be.

This was the part of Dusk that took me the longest to understand.

Dusk isn’t trying to make regulated finance invisible.

It is trying to keep sensitive information private while still allowing the right parties to verify what they need to verify.

Its Phoenix model uses zero-knowledge cryptography for privacy-preserving transactions, while Phoenix 2.0 is designed to support identification of the sender when required without exposing transaction information to the wider public.

That changed how I looked at the project.

I used to associate “privacy blockchain” with one word:

hiding.

After reading more about Dusk, I started thinking about privacy differently:

control.

Who can see the information?

Who actually needs to see it?

What needs to be proven?

And what doesn’t need to be exposed?

Maybe the future of financial blockchains isn’t about choosing between transparency and privacy.

Maybe it is about making transparency selective.

That was probably my biggest takeaway from spending time with DUSK.
