Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake said Ethereum’s L1 cryptography roadmap will move from Poseidon to traditional hash functions such as SHA or BLAKE. Poseidon is designed for efficient use in SNARK-based zero-knowledge proofs, but advances in binary-field SNARKs now allow traditional hashes to be proven efficiently, reducing the need for specialized SNARK-friendly hashes.The shift aligns with Vitalik Buterin’s emphasis on quantum security and privacy. Drake said the plan points to a production-grade leanVM in 2027, followed by deployments across Ethereum’s consensus, data and execution layers in 2028.
