This afternoon, I started spending time learning about DuskEVM, Hedger and Confidential EVM and left with more questions than answers. Strangely, I see that as a good sign.

If I understand Dusk too quickly, I usually assume I’ve missed something.

There is one thing that keeps pulling me back: the way Dusk approaches privacy for on-chain finance.

I started with the expectation of a privacy blockchain that hides everything. Instead, I saw a more practical idea: controlled privacy.

Dusk keeps balances and transaction amounts private, while still allowing audits when needed. The more I look at it, the more I realize this could be the kind of privacy financial institutions actually need.

I also realized I was looking at privacy through an old lens: the more private, the better.

I kept asking myself, “Does privacy mean that no one should be able to see anything?”

Maybe that is completely the wrong question.

DuskEVM is also notable for bringing Solidity, Hardhat and MetaMask into the Dusk ecosystem, reducing the barrier for developers.

But what I am still struggling to understand is how well Hedger will actually work in practice.

Hedger combines homomorphic encryption with zero-knowledge proofs to compute on encrypted data and prove that the result is valid.

If it works as designed, what does this really mean for privacy, auditing and on-chain finance?

I don’t think I have fully answered that yet.

Right now, I care less about the privacy narrative and more about the mechanisms behind Hedger and Confidential EVM.

That is usually where the most meaningful details are hidden.

The next thing on my reading list is the architecture of Hedger and Confidential EVM.

I have a feeling that is where my current understanding will either hold up - or completely change.
