PUTIN WARNS EUROPE: RUSSIA WILL RETALIATE IF EU SEIZES ITS SHIPS
Tensions between Russia and the European Union are rising sharply after Vladimir Putin warned that Moscow would respond “in the same way” if European countries begin seizing Russian merchant vessels.
The warning comes as the EU steps up pressure on Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”, expanding sanctions against hundreds of vessels suspected of helping Moscow circumvent Western restrictions. European authorities have already detained some ships and crews for inspections, while several governments are considering tougher maritime measures.
Putin described the potential seizures as “piracy and banditry” and said Russian retaliation would not necessarily be limited to the waters where Russian ships were intercepted. According to him, Moscow could act wherever it considers “necessary and appropriate.”
Speaking from Sakhalin in Russia’s Far East, Putin also accused NATO of expanding its military presence in the Asia-Pacific and increasing tensions in the Arctic.
