According to CNBC, lettuce prices fell 16.4% from June in July, the largest one-month drop on record, as the multistate cyclospora outbreak pushed diners away from the leafy green. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said lettuce posted the steepest month-over-month decline in the consumer price index's food category in July, even as overall food prices rose 0.1% during the month. Lettuce prices were still up about 7.5% from a year earlier.

The Food and Drug Administration linked iceberg lettuce processed at a Taylor Farms facility in central Mexico to the outbreak, and Taylor Farms voluntarily recalled products from that site. Cava CEO Brett Schulman said broader consumer concerns around leafy greens and fresh produce affected near-term sales around the end of the company's second quarter, though he said sales trends have started to rebound. Sweetgreen said last week that demand weakened because of the outbreak and lowered its full-year outlook. Chipotle said cyclospora affected sales by about 2 percentage points in the back half of July, while Yum Brands CEO Chris Turner said the outbreak led to a meaningful near-term sales impact at Taco Bell, though sales had been steadily improving.
