This structure has helped Solana develop a substantial developer ecosystem. Electric Capital's live developer dashboard showed roughly 2,500 monthly active Solana developers in its available 2026 data, although developer counts naturally fluctuate over time.
The important question is whether Solana can translate that developer activity into applications capable of maintaining demand beyond individual market trends.
Ethereum Is Betting Heavily on Layer 2
Ethereum's Layer-2 strategy is one of its greatest opportunities, but also one of its biggest challenges.
Rollups can already make transactions substantially cheaper than Ethereum's base layer, and Ethereum's roadmap aims to keep increasing the amount of inexpensive data capacity available to them.
That could allow Ethereum to support enormous amounts of activity without requiring every transaction to execute directly on the L1.

Solana's architecture could be particularly attractive for applications where users expect quick interactions.

This gives Solana an interesting growth opportunity. Crypto adoption may increasingly depend on applications where users barely notice that blockchain technology is operating underneath them.
If developers can build consumer products that attract users for their usefulness rather than simply token incentives, Solana's high-performance architecture could become an important advantage.
Ethereum's Institutional Position Could Be Powerful
Ethereum has another major growth story: becoming infrastructure for increasingly sophisticated on-chain finance.
The Ethereum Foundation now describes L1 as a global hub for settlement, shared state, liquidity and DeFi, while Layer-2 networks provide additional customization and scale.
That architecture could be valuable for financial applications where security and settlement guarantees matter enormously.
Ethereum doesn't necessarily need every transaction to happen directly on mainnet. Its longer-term opportunity is to become the settlement foundation underneath a much larger collection of financial networks and applications.
The Developer Battle Matters
Blockchain ecosystems ultimately need developers.
A network can offer impressive performance, but without builders creating useful products, technological advantages have limited value.
Ethereum benefits from years of tooling, infrastructure and developer experience. Solana, meanwhile, has established a meaningful developer community of its own, according to Electric Capital's ongoing developer tracking.
The more interesting competition may therefore be over new developers.
If the next generation of builders chooses Solana for speed and simplicity, its ecosystem could expand rapidly. If developers continue choosing Ethereum and its Layer-2 ecosystem for security, liquidity and composability, Ethereum's network effects could remain difficult to challenge.
Ethereum Is Also Making Its Base Layer Stronger
It would be misleading to describe Ethereum as relying exclusively on Layer 2.
Ethereum is simultaneously increasing L1 capacity. Its roadmap lists Glamsterdam as an upgrade in development, with features designed to support greater scalability and parallel processing.
The Ethereum Foundation has also described scaling, improving user experience and hardening the L1 as major protocol priorities for 2026.
This suggests Ethereum's future could combine a substantially stronger base layer with a large network of specialized L2 chains.
So, Which Has the Stronger Growth Story?
There isn't one obvious winner because Ethereum and Solana are optimized around different strengths.
Ethereum has the stronger case around established infrastructure, settlement, security-focused scaling and a broad L1-plus-L2 ecosystem. Its challenge is making that increasingly complex ecosystem feel simple and connected.
Solana's growth story centers more heavily on speed, a unified user experience and applications that benefit from frequent, inexpensive transactions. Its challenge is turning strong activity into durable adoption across multiple market cycles.
The next stage of blockchain competition may therefore be less about Ethereum versus Solana and more about which scaling philosophy attracts the most meaningful activity.
