The OCC’s direction signals a shift: digital firms are no longer asking to sit beside banks; they’re positioning to become regulated financial infrastructure. National trust bank charters can give crypto and fintech companies a regulatory framework for custody, stablecoins, payments, and other permitted activities. The advantage is bigger than branding: one national charter can reduce fragmented state licensing and strengthen credibility. The OCC already lists numerous digital-asset applications, while firms including Ripple, Circle, BitGo and Kraken have pursued trust charters. This could accelerate the convergence of crypto and finance. But charter approval is not a free pass—capital, governance, compliance and risk controls still matter. The real alpha: crypto is moving from fintech challenger to regulated financial infrastructure.😎
