Mysten Labs co-founder and chief cryptographer Kostas Chalkias said he has leased a dedicated factory at a secret location to scale production of quantum-safe hardware wallet cards for Sui. According to Odaily, he aims to keep the cost of a single quantum card key below $10, with NFC quantum signing taking one to two seconds.
Chalkias said the project is being developed using his personal time outside work and may include funding cards for users who cannot afford them. The plan partly stems from a recent Coldcard hardware wallet incident, although the flaw was not a quantum attack.
Coldcard maker Coinkite disclosed that a firmware flaw traceable to a 2021 update bypassed the hardware random number chip and generated keys through a predictable process related to the device serial number and other factors. Attackers began moving funds on July 30, and losses rose to about 2,055 BTC across more than 7,700 addresses.
At the protocol level, Sui plans to add two post-quantum signature schemes approved by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, one for everyday accounts and one for high-value Move vaults. Existing accounts can rotate to quantum-safe keys based on the original recovery phrase without migrating to a new wallet.
