Amazon plans to invest in a large data center and an associated natural gas power plant in Pecos County, Texas. According to Sina Finance, the plant has an approved annual carbon dioxide emissions limit of up to 33 million tons, higher than any existing U.S. power facility, and is expected to become the country's largest single greenhouse gas source once completed.
Driven by the huge energy demand from artificial intelligence development, U.S. tech giants are continuing to push large natural gas power projects. Amazon's carbon emissions jumped 16% last year, running counter to its pledge to eliminate carbon emissions entirely by 2040. The company also faces growing political resistance as data center energy use may raise local electricity costs.
An Amazon spokesperson said the data center will be powered by a newly built on-site power facility and that it will not push up Texas household electricity bills. The spokesperson also said the world is very different from when the company launched its climate initiative and reiterated that Amazon's commitment has not changed.
