According to CNBC, Ken Griffin’s Citadel posted strong July gains across its main hedge funds, led by its flagship Wellington multistrategy fund, which returned 5.9% and marked its best month since 2022. The person familiar with the firm’s performance said the tactical trading fund gained 11.1% in July and was up 27% for the year, while the equities fund advanced 14.2% last month and was also up 27% in 2026. Citadel also bought much of the public-stock portfolio once held by Leopold Aschenbrenner’s Situational Awareness after the fund unraveled following steep losses, margin calls and forced sales. The source said Citadel purchased many of the holdings at a significant discount and benefited as markets recovered late in the month. Situational Awareness had held large positions in AI infrastructure companies while betting against software stocks, a strategy that backfired as software shares rallied and AI hardware names fell. Stocks including Nebius and Micron rebounded in the final days of July after the liquidation. Citadel managed about $71 billion in assets as of July 1 and declined to comment.
