I’ve been sitting with the Babylon staking docs again. Not the yield talk or the campaign stuff that part never really sticks. It’s the slashing design that keeps coming back.
The pitch is clean: no custodian, no bridge, your BTC never leaves the Bitcoin chain, you keep the keys. On paper it holds.
But the moment you stake, you’re still picking a Finality Provider. If that FP double-signs, you take a partial slash 5% on the BABY side, a smaller cut on the BTC side. It’s on-chain, it’s not total loss, the rest comes back. Still a counterparty. The self-custody claim is about where the coins sit. It doesn’t say anything about the person you just handed voting power to.
I’ve seen this same gap for years across restaking stories. Marketing sells trustless. The actual mechanic is trust-minimized. Better than most of what’s out there, but not zero.
I keep wondering how many people actually look at an FP’s slashing history before just grabbing whatever’s sitting at the top of the list. Most of the time that quiet check gets lost under whatever’s loudest that week. The friction never disappears. It just slides one layer deeper.
