Proof of Attendance Protocol Shuts Down After Five Years
Proof of Attendance Protocol, or POAP, is winding down after more than five years of creating onchain collectibles for conferences, hackathons, classrooms and community events, co-founder Isabel Gonzalez announced.
POAP allowed users to scan a QR code and mint a unique badge as proof that they attended an online or in-person event. Nearly 7.6 million POAPs were issued by more than 46,210 organizations and creators, including Coinbase, American Express, Warner Music Group and Bayer.
The project also created badges commemorating major Ethereum milestones, including The Merge. Its origins date back to an ETHDenver hackathon in 2019, before the formal project launched in 2021.
Gonzalez said crypto funding cycles and distribution challenges made it difficult to build a sustainable business without undermining the community-focused values that gave POAP its cultural significance.
Existing POAP tokens are expected to remain accessible and tradable onchain after the company closes.
