I first judged Babylon’s backup design from the 8.6 TB number, and honestly, it looked like a simple durability upgrade.
But doubling storage from 4.3 TB is not the interesting part.
The real shift is behavioral. Smaller operators may not buy more hardware. They may move toward shared storage, hosted recovery systems, or the same infrastructure providers already used by everyone else. That removes one failure point, yes, but quietly creates another.
Some redundancy cost is normal. A serious network should not depend on one disk and hope.
The real test for BABY is infrastructure strength vs real operator independence. Can smaller participants maintain two verified copies without outsourcing control? Can they recover fast enough during failure, or does “redundancy” only exist because one provider holds both paths?
This matters because Babylon is not only protecting data. It is shaping who can remain operational as counterparty relationships grow. One extra copy adds 4.3 TB per 100 relationships, and that burden compounds.
Babylon may reduce hardware failure risk while increasing provider concentration. I am not calling the model broken.
Still BABY’s deeper security question is uncomfortable does the second copy create resilience or just make dependence look safer?
