El Salvador’s two main opposition parties have formally nominated candidates for the February 2027 presidential election. According to Odaily, the Nationalist Republican Alliance named former lawmaker Maytee Iraheta, while the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front nominated doctor and labor leader Rafael Aguirre.

Both candidates have said they oppose President Nayib Bukele’s bitcoin strategy and described it as a fiscal failure. Bukele’s approval rating is 94%, and his Nuevas Ideas party has completed its nomination process.

El Salvador revoked bitcoin’s status as legal tender in February 2025 after reaching a $1.4 billion loan agreement with the IMF, and the U.S. dollar became the only official currency again. The government has continued its plan to buy about one bitcoin per day and held about 7,730 BTC as of July 27.
