The easiest way to describe Babylon to a newcomer is "it replaces wrapped BTC," and I get why that stereotype spreads. Wrapped tokens like WBTC ask you to hand real Bitcoin to a custodian in exchange for an IOU on another chain, and roughly 150,000 BTC sits in that model today. Babylon's pitch is the opposite: BTC gets locked in a self custodied, pre-signed transaction on Bitcoin itself, and a zero-knowledge proof, not a company, decides when it can move. No custodian holding the keys, no company that can freeze a balance.
That framing starts to crack once you follow the data one step further. When Babylon's vaults collateralize a loan on Ethereum, something still has to tell that Ethereum contract what the BTC price is doing and whether a repayment actually happened on Bitcoin. That job falls to oracles and light clients, external systems relaying data across chains. They are not custodians and they cannot move the BTC directly, but they are a dependency the no-bridge framing tends to leave out entirely.
Babylon is not wrapped BTC wearing a new name, the custody model really is different and meaningfully safer against a custodian simply disappearing with funds. It is not free of cross-chain dependencies either. Swapping a custodian for an oracle network is progress, not the elimination of trust the stereotype implies.
