Storj Labs providing decentralized cloud storage and computing services, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States to restructure financial liabilities dating back to previous periods.
The company announced that on July 26, 2026, it voluntarily filed for reorganization with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of West Virginia. The case will proceed under Case No. 5:26-bk-00512. Storj emphasized that the filing is not intended to shut down operations and that the company will continue its normal business activities.
According to the bankruptcy filing summary, both the company's assets and liabilities are estimated to be between $1 million and $10 million. Storj Labs is reported to have between 1 and 49 creditors.
Storj said the restructuring is intended to resolve "historical liabilities" that were incurred before the company's current strategy was implemented. The company noted that its principal shareholder, Inveniam, continues to finance Storj and that operations have already been resized to match current market conditions. However, it stated that these legacy liabilities cannot be eliminated through business growth alone.
The company said:
"Today, Storj initiated an accelerated, court-supervised voluntary financial restructuring process to address legacy liabilities that predate our current strategy. Our business and network continue to operate normally."
Storj also stated that it does not expect any changes to customer services, its decentralized storage network, or its workforce during the Chapter 11 process. Employee wages and ordinary business obligations incurred after the filing are expected to be paid, subject to the necessary court approvals.
Additionally, the company plans to divest certain non-core operations resulting from previous acquisitions and refocus on its core decentralized storage business. According to Storj, Inveniam supports the restructuring as an appropriate step toward establishing a sustainable financial foundation.
New Ownership Model Proposed for STORJ Token Holders
Storj's management also announced that it intends to propose a new ownership structure for the reorganized company, allowing participation from the management team, investors, the decentralized network community, and STORJ token holders.
However, the company stressed that any allocation to token holders has not yet been finalized. Eligibility requirements, distribution mechanisms, and other details will be developed as part of the restructuring plan and will require approval by the bankruptcy court.
Storj further clarified that the Chapter 11 filing does not change the current utility of the STORJ token within the network. The company also stated that it will not comment on the token's price while the restructuring process is ongoing.
