Abbot, Doctor of the Church & Mellifluous Doctor
Born in 1090 in France, Bernard entered Citeaux and founded Clairvaux, becoming one of the most influential figures of the 12th century. A mystic, preacher of the Crusades, and reformer. Author of many works on the love of God. Died in 1153. Canonized in 1174 and declared Doctor in 1830.
“Jesus is honey in the mouth, music in the ear, joy in the heart.”
The “Mellifluous Doctor” whose honeyed words drew souls to the love of God — a giant of monastic reform and mysticism.
