I keep noticing the same pitch in AI memory products: more conversations remembered, more context held onto, more continuity. Volume as the whole story.
Except volume doesn't explain why some things an AI remembers stick, and others quietly stop being true.
I figured that was lag at first — old context the system hadn't caught up to. Then I looked at how OpenGradient's MemSync actually handles it, and the lag turned out to be on purpose.
It splits memory into two buckets. Semantic: the stuff that defines who you are. Episodic: the stuff that defines what you're doing this week. One sticks around. The other has a shelf life. So it's not just remembering you — it's making a call about which parts of you are permanent and which parts pass through.
I hadn't thought about who's making that call until I checked. The classification runs through the same inference pipeline as everything else. An LLM decides whether something about you belongs in the part that lasts.
What got me was the other half of that. Nothing in how it's described says episodic memory gets deleted. It just stops being treated as current. The fact stays somewhere — it just quietly loses its claim on being relevant to who you are right now.
So the system isn't forgetting anything. It's demoting it — and the same judgment that gets a conversation wrong sometimes is also the judgment deciding what's still you, and what's just something you used to be.
