The text looks like a wrong number. "Hi David, are we still on for lunch?" You reply that they have the wrong person. They are friendly about it. You keep talking.
That is the opening move of a scam that stole $5.8 billion in a single year.
It is called pig butchering. The name comes from fattening a pig before slaughter. The scammer spends weeks, sometimes months, building a real relationship. No money mentioned. Just trust. Then comes the "great investment" in crypto, on a platform that looks flawless and is entirely fake. Your balance goes up. You feel smart. You put in more.
The average victim loses $177,000. And here is the part nobody says out loud. The person running the scam is often a trafficking victim too, locked in a compound, beaten if they fail to convert you.
It is the rare crime where almost everyone touching it is being destroyed by it. Slow down when a stranger gets very interested in your portfolio.
