Coinbase just dropped an AI Agent marketplace where bots shop, pay, and transact without asking humans. This isn't sci-fi anymore.

Here's the timeline:

May 2025: Coinbase launches x402 protocol. Named after the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code that's been dormant for 30+ years. Now AI agents can pay with stablecoins (USDC) autonomously. No API keys, no sign-ups.

April 2026: Linux Foundation takes over x402 governance. Backed by Cloudflare, Stripe, AWS, Google, Shopify, Visa, Mastercard. Coinbase no longer controls it alone.

April 19, 2026: Agentic .market goes live. Nick Prince (Coinbase Head of Product) calls it an "App Store for Agents." 7 categories: Inference, Data, Media, Search, Social, Infrastructure, Trading.

The numbers are insane:
- 165M+ transactions processed via x402
- $50M+ in total volume
- 480,000 active AI agents transacting right now
- Growth from 50M to 165M txns in just a few months

How x402 works:
AI requests a paid service → Server responds with 402 Payment Required → AI pays on-chain (usually USDC on Base L2) → Server releases service. All in ~200 milliseconds.

Brian Armstrong: "AI agents will outnumber human transactions online soon."

Jeremy Allaire (Circle CEO): "Billions of AI agents will transact on-chain within 3-5 years."

But not everyone's bullish.

ZachXBT: "99% of AI agent tokens are scams. Worse than memecoins because they fake legitimacy to trap uninformed buyers."

Gray Swan AI researchers found you can manipulate agents to bypass their own safeguards. One bad prompt = funds gone forever. No reversals on-chain.

The real question isn't "Will AI agents come?" It's "Will regulations catch up?"

Right now, almost no country has laws for AI making autonomous financial decisions. If your AI loses your money, who do you sue? The AI? The dev? Coinbase?

480,000 agents today. Could be 480 million in 3 years.

Is x402 the infrastructure for the AI economy? Or will it fade like Web3 games?

Watch closely.
