Bitlayer Labs is a project focused on extending the capabilities of Bitcoin through BitVM technology, specifically Bitcoin's Layer 2 solution. Bitlayer aims to allow Ethereum smart contracts to run directly on the Bitcoin blockchain, while maintaining Bitcoin's security. The project was co-founded by Charlie Hu and Kevin He.
Bitlayer acts as a Layer 2 solution, processing off-chain transactions and then aggregating them into batches and recording them on the Bitcoin blockchain. This increases scalability, speed, and reduces transaction costs compared to transacting directly on Bitcoin. Bitlayer also uses Layered Virtual Machine (LVM) technology to create a separate execution environment on Bitcoin, allowing support for a variety of smart contracts, including EVM smart contracts and proofs from zk-SNARKs/zk-STARKs.
One of Bitlayer's notable technologies is Discreet Log Contracts (DLC), which allows transacting parties to design contract terms in advance and use an intermediary oracle to sign the agreement, thereby creating more complex and private transactions than other Layer 2 solutions on Bitcoin.
