Ripple Prepares for a Potential $800 Million XRP Sale in February
Ripple, the company behind the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and the largest holder of XRP tokens, is preparing for its monthly treasury operations in February. On-chain data reveals that out of the 1 billion XRP unlocked on February 1, Ripple has set aside 300 million XRP for potential sales. At the current market price, this amount is valued at approximately $795 million.
Transaction history from XRP Scan shows that the labeled ‘Ripple (1)’ account received these tokens. This follows Ripple’s established pattern of unlocking 1 billion XRP from the genesis distribution each month, reserving a portion for budgeted sales, and re-locking the remaining tokens for future releases.
XRP Price Analysis Amid Potential Ripple Sell-Off
At the time of writing, XRP is trading at $2.65, reflecting a 24.36% increase year-to-date.
In January, Ripple also reserved 300 million XRP and later sold them. This amount was higher than the 2024 average of 200 million XRP per month. However, despite this selling activity, the token maintained strong demand, effectively absorbing the selling pressure and performing well.
On-chain data indicates that the XRP tokens reserved by Ripple each month typically move to unidentified accounts and eventually to centralized exchange deposit addresses, suggesting they are being sold on the open market.
While the potential sale of nearly $800 million worth of XRP is significant, it does not necessarily indicate a poor market performance. For XRP to maintain its momentum, it must continue to attract strong demand despite the ongoing monthly token dilution. Since 2012, Ripple has recorded one of the largest sell-offs (in USD value) among all cryptocurrency projects.
