Worldcoin Crypto Project Gains Popularity in Chile, 1% of the Population Already Registered
The Worldcoin crypto project, which employs iris biometric scans as proof of identity, has achieved a historic milestone in Chile. The organization reports that it has registered 200,000 Chilean citizens since its launch.
As reported by Bitcoin.com on Thursday (September 28, 2023), with Chile's population numbering around 19.5 million, this means that over 1% of the population has signed up to receive Worldcoin rewards in the form of WLD Coin, the native token of the protocol.
This growth signifies the increasing popularity of the project in South American countries, which have shown interest in the World ID application proposal.
Due to this rising demand, Tools For Humanity, a contributor to Worldcoin, has expanded its operations in Chile, setting up more verification stations in Vina del Mar and Concepcion while maintaining verification operations in the capital, Santiago.
Worldcoin verification involves a specific hardware device called the 'ball,' used to scan the eyes of users who wish to verify their ID to become a part of the Worldcoin system.
Popularity Amidst Adversity
The popularity of the Worldcoin project extends to other Latin American countries that have embraced it due to its grant funding.
In August, the organization reported registering over 9,500 citizens in Argentina in a single day, equivalent to one verification every nine seconds, a remarkable achievement considering there are only four verification stations in the country.
Additionally, according to data from the Kenyan parliamentary committee tasked with investigating the project, 350,000 Kenyan citizens had registered in July, which accounted for 25% of the platform's user base at that time.
However, the Kenyan government halted Worldcoin activities in August and attempted to apprehend Alex Blania, the CEO and one of the founders of Tools For Humanity, and Thomas Scott, the legal spokesperson for Tools For Humanity, after they appeared before the Kenyan National Assembly in a hearing.
