Starting Tuesday, Vanguard will allow its 50 million clients to trade regulated cryptocurrency ETFs and mutual funds on its brokerage platform, Bloomberg reported.
The world’s second-largest asset manager ($11T AUM), long opposed to crypto products while rivals like BlackRock and Fidelity embraced them, now views these funds as sufficiently mature.
“Cryptocurrency ETFs and mutual funds have been tested through periods of market volatility, performing as designed while maintaining liquidity,” said Andrew Kadjeski, Vanguard’s head of brokerage and investments. “Administrative processes have matured and investor preferences continue to evolve.”
Vanguard will support most SEC-approved crypto ETFs and mutual funds — similar to how it treats gold or other niche assets — but will continue to block funds tied to memecoins or lacking regulatory approval.
The decision gives Vanguard clients access to the same spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs offered by BlackRock and others, which have grown to ~$120B (BTC) and ~$20B (ETH) in AUM since their 2024 launch.
