Argentina's banks aren't getting crypto yet, but read the fine print.
At an Argentine Payment Chamber event, BCRA superintendent Juan Curutchet was asked about crypto and said nothing is going to happen this year. He added that he sees it as a possibility in a second Milei presidency.
**What's actually known:**
- The 2022 ban on banks offering crypto services stays in place.
- Curutchet tied any change to economic fragility easing and a pending agenda for later.
- "Two years" is the outlet's reading of that timeline, not a formal BCRA commitment.
- Local bank sources had earlier pointed to a draft that would allow bank crypto services. This statement cuts against it.
**Why it matters:**
Argentina received over $88.5B in crypto value in the 12 months to June 30 (Chainalysis), second in Latin America. Demand is clearly there, but access stays on exchanges, P2P and stablecoins.
**One thing worth watching:**
Banking groups are reportedly building stablecoin projects for treasury management and conditional payments. They're doing it through separate companies, which keeps them inside the current ban.
So this is a timing signal tied to politics and macro stability, not a rejection of crypto itself. I wouldn't treat any date as fixed.
Do you think a political shift or economic stability is the bigger unlock here? 👇
